Kyle Gregg has decided to step into the most rapidly expanding group on the local rally scene...Group R5. His Ford Fiesta is on island and his first event in an insanely stacked and competitive group is just one week away. We took the opportunity to speak to Kyle to find out just what made him decide to join the R5 group and what rally fans can expect from him.
What was behind the decision for Kyle joining the R5 group? "I've always loved rallying and I wanted a car that would allow me to fight for a win in Rally Barbados. Circuit racing is on the decline here in Jamaica, so it was the perfect time to make the switch."
With the decision to join the group made, next up was deciding what car would be used. Skoda and Ford are the popular choices but Citroen and Hyundai aren't too shabby either. "I've always been a Ford fan. With MSport giving me the latest upgrades compared to the previous Fiestas that were there. I believe the car will be very competitive. Plus, there were too many Skodas."
While Kyle is no stranger to Barbados, it's been a while since he's competed in a rally here and also done one on tarmac. What are his plans for the 2023 season? "Rally Barbados 2015 was my last tarmac event. Jamaica's rallying is done strictly on gravel." Honestly I want to try and win but realistically I have to get accustomed to the roads and the car. These guys have been driving the stages for years. Local knowledge is key! I'll be doing all of the rounds of the R5 championship as I need to get as much seat time in the car as possible."
With just two events before Sol Rally Barbados what are Kyle's expectations? "My expectations for Sol Rally Barbados? Being on the podium is my main goal. A Top 5 finish with make me smile." Having seen his father Gary win Sol Rally Barbados 2006, will Kyle be able to replicate that feat? No pressure, then.
